The Thomas Creek Figure Skating Club(TCFSC) has received non-profit status and is launching a campaign to interest organizations in supporting the club through sponsorships. The goal of the program is to off-set club ice costs so that quality club skating programs can continue. To date the club has supported itself through membership dues and fund raising, but the cost of ice alone is approaching $40,000 a season. All disciplines of figure skating are promoted by the TCFSC: freestyle, ice dance, moves in the field and synchronized team skating The club was formed to answer the need in our community for all levels of skaters to have a place they felt welcome and could perfect their skills. Membership includes skaters just completing a basic skill program to those competing at sectional and regional levels. Heather Woytash, Vice-President in charge of fund raising, is confident that businesses in the area will respond to the club’s efforts, “children who are active in sports do better in school and grow into well-rounded adults who give back to their community. Participation in figure skating as a sport teaches children perseverance, patience, dedication, goal setting, confidence and friendship. All of these qualities help to build strong individuals and even stronger communities.” The club hosts two skating shows per year for the skating enthusiast in the community to enjoy. By donating proceeds from the spring show to the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped (SABAH) the club was able to help others less advantaged enjoy the benefits of figure skating. The club also promotes figure skating skills by hosting test sessions, seminars and workshops throughout the year. With the community’s support and the continued fund raising efforts by club members, quality figure skating programs can be maintained for area children. Keeping costs at a reasonable level will allow more young skaters to participate in this sport. For more information about sponsorship or the club please contact Heather at 585-377-6104.
