Synchronized skating had its origins in shows like the “ Ice Follies” and the “ Ice Capades” and truly adds variety and excitement to any demonstration of figure skating. It is the fastest growing figure skating sport in the US. In team skating, individuals skate as one, performing routines consisting of formations & transitions uniquely choreographed to music. Synchronized skating has advantages for skaters of all ages. While figure skating is defined by its oneness; individual skaters practicing and skating alone, synchronized is all about skating together. This sport helps skaters improve on all their skating skills and compliments other disciplines of skating. Synchronized builds social skills, a sense of teamwork, and fosters good friendships which are all skills that are beneficial throughout life
Since our beginnings as a 13 member Teen Introductory team in Sept. 2001, the Mirror Images have expanded to 38 skaters on three different teams. Our season starts in late August and winds up in April. This year we have a Beginner team practicing once a week on Saturday mornings, working both on and off the ice. We also have an Open Juvenile team practicing twice a week: Saturday mornings and before school on Thursdays. Traditions at Thomas Creek include our yearly “team building” day in early October, which enables both new and veteran skaters to get to know each other better and begin working together as a group. Another favorite activity is the annual “hair & makeup” luncheon, when each team’s new, customized “look” for the season is unveiled by the Coaches. Competitions and ice shows keep the Mirror Images busy from early December to early April. The teams perform in the Thomas Creek holiday and other shows at local arenas when invited. In past years they have been guest skaters in Buffalo, Geneva, and Webster. We also participate in 4-5 competitions in the western NY and southern Ontario area, in addition to traveling out-of-state for larger events such as the Leanne Miele competition in New Jersey.
